A very annoyed church
By IANSSunday, March 22, 2009
The Congress list for 16 parliamentary seats in Kerala has stunned the influential Catholic church in the state. None of the candidates recommended by it has found a place.
The first jolt came when the archbishop of the Thrissur archdiocese, Andrews Thazhathu, urged Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to make Tom Vadakkan the candidate from there. But that was not to be.
Similarly, the Varappuzha archdiocese recommended National Students Union (NSU) president Hibi Eden from Ernakulam. But this ticket too went to someone else.
The jolt is felt more acutely because the Catholic church has already been criticising the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
