Job losses were widespread last month
A snapshot of major employment categories, and how they fared in the past two months:
Construction: Cut 64,000 jobs in September, following losses of 60,000 in August.
Manufacturing: Eliminated 51,000 jobs in September, after cutting 66,000 in August.
Retailers: Cut nearly 39,000 jobs in September, after cuts of nearly 9,000 in August.
Transportation: Cut 15,400 jobs in September, compared with just 300 in August.
Financial: Lost 10,000 jobs in September, following 25,000 losses in August.
Professional and business services: Cut 8,000 jobs in September, after 19,000 reductions in August.
Education and health services: Added 3,000 jobs in September, following a gain of 46,000 in August.
Leisure and hospitality: Cut 9,000 positions in September, on top of 14,000 in August.
Government: Eliminated 53,000 jobs in September, following a reduction of 19,000 in August.
