A scary place: NY State Capitol tours explore building’s ghost stories, legends, folklore

ALBANY, N.Y. — Is the State Capitol haunted? Visitors to the historic building in downtown Albany can determine for themselves this month.
The state Office of General Services is kicking off special tours of the Capitol that will explore the legends, folklore and “ghost stories” connected to the building.
The “Capitol Hauntings Tours” beginning Monday are free and open to the public, and they run through Halloween on Oct. 31. Weekday afternoon tours are being offered daily until Oct. 30, with evening tours available Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 27-30. Saturday tours are being offered Oct. 17, 24 and 31.
Visitors will hear stories about the 1911 fire that killed the Capitol’s night watchman as well as the legend of the “Secret Demon” near the Great Western Staircase.
Reservations are required.
