Blaze destroys southern Ariz. fire station

TUCSON, Ariz. — Six firefighters in Arizona have escaped injury after a fire broke out in their station north of Tucson while they slept.

Golder Ranch Fire Chief John Fink says a firefighter was awakened by a banging sound on the wall early Wednesday and found the communication room in flames.

He says the man woke his colleagues, who got out safely and then managed to get the ambulance and fire engine out of the building.

Fink says the firefighters, with the help of other crews, controlled the fire in about 30 minutes.

He says the fire caused about an estimated $500,000 in damage and that the station would have to be rebuilt. He says the building didn’t have sprinklers, but that the department recently received a grant and planned to retrofit the station.
