ALGIERS - At least 24 gendarmes were killed when armed rebels opened fire on their convoy in the Algerian province of Burj Buaririj, media reports said Thursday.
The rebels first detonated two self-made explosive devices and then opened fire on their convoy Wednesday. The rebels also took away the arms of the gendarmes (armed police officials).
The injured were rushed to hospitals, reports said without specifying their numbers.
The Algerian government has meanwhile launched a massive search operation in the area to capture the culprits.
