San Diego Zoo panda gives birth to 5th cub
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Zoo says its prized giant panda has given birth to her fifth cub, the 13th panda in the United States.
The zoo announced Wednesday that 17-year-old Bai Yun (by-yuhn) had delivered. No word yet on whether it’s a male or female.
Her offspring weighs just a few ounces and will not be on public view for several months. Instead, a live panda camera will record mother and cub in their den.
The zoo only announced last week that Bai Yun was pregnant. She wasn’t showing. Ultrasound testing revealed the fetus.
The father is zoo panda Gao Gao (Gow-Gow). The two mated in April.
Bai Yun has four other offspring. Two are at the zoo and two are in a breeding program in China.
