TEHRAN - At least 17 people were killed and 19 injured Friday when an Iranian plane caught fire while landing in the northeast city of Mashad.

An official from the local governor’s office said that the Russian-made Ilyushin belonging to the private airline Arya caught fire and crashed into a wall at the side of the airport runway.

The official said 153 passengers were on board. He said surviving passengers and the deceased had been taken from the aircraft and the fire extinguished.

Just two weeks ago, an Iranian passenger plane crashed on a flight from Tehran to Armenia, killing all 168 on board.

With today’s technology, why are we relying on black boxes to retrieve information about the causes of plane crashes? Is it not better for planes to send continuous automated information via satellite to the airline’s offices concerning the functioning and mal-functioning of the plane?
