Inmate shot during fight at US prison in Indiana

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Officials at a federal prison in western Indiana say two inmates were injured when guards opened fire while breaking up a fight at the prison’s recreation yard.

The U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute says both inmates were sent to hospitals Thursday morning, and one had sustained a gunshot wound.

The prison is about 70 miles west of Indianapolis and was placed on lockdown.

Prison spokeswoman Hattie Sims says no guards were injured.

The Terre Haute prison is the only place in the nation housing federal death row inmates and the only place where they are executed.
